Modern ports are about more than just wharves, vessels, and cranes; they are also about how digital technology connects business processes to ensure operations are safe, efficient, integrated, and timely. Through the Campus Field Trip for the Champion Innovation Challenge (I-CON) 3.0, Pelindo Solusi Digital invites students from the University of Indonesia (UI), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), and Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) to take a closer look at how technology, data, and integration serve as the foundation for supporting port operations while driving the transformation toward a more modern and competitive "Smart Port."

Modern ports are defined by more than just their wharves, cranes, and vessels. Underlying every activity is a series of interconnected business processes supported by digital technology, ensuring that port services operate safely, efficiently, seamlessly, and punctually. Through the "Campus Field Trip" component of the Champion Innovation Challenge (I-CON) 3.0, Pelindo Solusi Digital invited students from the University of Indonesia (UI), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), and Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) to understand how technology serves as the fundamental pillar of modern port operations.

In the "Technology Behind Port" session, students explored why digital transformation has become essential for the port industry. As key nodes in the national logistics network, ports involve diverse stakeholders and complex operational processes, necessitating rapid, accurate coordination, data exchange, and decision-making. Digital technology acts as an enabler, allowing these processes to function more effectively and cohesively.

The learning experience continued with an exploration of the "Digital Journey of Port Operations"—tracing a vessel's path from its entry into the port area to the completion of all its activities.

Students were introduced to how specific digital solutions support each stage of the business process based on function. This ranged from the management of pilotage and tugboat services upon a vessel's arrival to terminal loading and unloading planning, the coordination of container yard activities and vehicle traffic, warehouse management, and centralized operational monitoring.

Beyond understanding business process workflows, participants gained insight into how Pelindo Solusi Digital develops solutions that do more than just automate operations; these solutions integrate various port services, generate accurate data and information, and drive the transformation toward a "Smart Port" that is efficient, integrated, and competitive. This approach demonstrates that port technology does not exist merely as isolated applications but as part of a digital ecosystem that connects all business processes from end to end. Agus Dharmawan, Director of Business Development, Infrastructure, and Services at Pelindo Solusi Digital, stated that an understanding of business processes serves as a crucial foundation for developing technological innovations that add value to the industry.

"We want students to understand that technology is not an end in itself, but rather an enabler that supports business processes, making them more effective, efficient, and integrated. By gaining insight into end-to-end port operational workflows, we hope they acquire a fresh perspective on how technology, data, and collaboration act as key drivers in the transformation of the maritime industry," he said.

A visit to the Planning & Control Room (PnC) enriched the students' learning experience by demonstrating how port operations are monitored in real-time to facilitate coordination and decision-making.

In addition to understanding current conditions, students were introduced to various technological trends poised to shape the future of the port industry, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, automation, and digital platforms and ecosystems. This introduction aims to broaden the students' horizons regarding innovation opportunities while fostering the development of talent capable of contributing to the digital transformation of Indonesia's maritime sector.

Through the Champion I-CON 3.0 Campus Field Trip, Pelindo Solusi Digital hopes this industry-based learning experience will deepen students' understanding of the relationship between business processes and technology, while inspiring the younger generation to become part of the digital transformation of Indonesia's maritime ecosystem.
